What is superficial thrombophlebitis?

Superficial thrombophlebitis, also known as phlebitis or superficial vein thrombosis, is an inflammation of veins near the surface of the skin, usually in the legs and feet. It is typically caused by an underlying blood clot and can appear red, swollen or tender. Superficial thrombophlebitis usually settles on its own within 1 – 2 weeks, however, it could be associated with other health conditions including varicose veins, and so may reoccur if not sufficiently dealt with.

What are the symptoms of superficial thrombophlebitis?

Our patients report a wide range of symptoms, including:

  • Changes to the colour and texture of the affected area – red, thick, hard and lumpy.
  • Localised swelling in the legs and feet.
  • Warm, itchy skin.
  • Pain and discomfort.

Can superficial thrombophlebitis cause other health problems?

Aside from being painful and a cosmetic issue, superficial thrombophlebitis can lead to other, more serious health conditions if left untreated, including:

Varicose veins

Varicose veins are caused when the valves in our veins weaken and allow blood to flow backwards and pool, creating high pressure and making them swell and enlarge. Subsequently, they are often blue or purple in colour, and can be lumpy, twisted or bulging in appearance. Varicose veins can cause heavy, restless legs, as well as painful, itchy and dry skin. Deep vein thrombosis (DVT)

A blood clot within a deep vein in the leg that can cause pain and swelling. A DVT may lead to more serious complications, such as a pulmonary embolism. This is when a piece of the clot breaks off into the bloodstream and blocks one of the blood vessels in the lungs.

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT)

The good news is that with the right treatment, superficial thrombophlebitis and its associated conditions can be remedied.
