How to make your varicose vein treatment recovery simple

Recovering from varicose vein treatment can be easier
than ever, thanks to modern techniques

If you’re researching varicose vein treatment in the UK, recovery is often a major concern. Most patients – understandably – want to know how long it will take to feel better, and when they can return to normal activities. Another question we frequently get asked is how modern treatments compare with older surgical approaches – after all, surely a more invasive option can only be a good thing…?

Let us explain what recovery really looks like after varicose vein treatment, comparing traditional vein surgery with today’s minimally invasive, walk-in, walk-out treatments, now widely regarded as best practice for treating leg veins.

Varicose Vein Treatment Has Changed…

In the past, varicose veins were treated using ligation and vein stripping, a procedure that would see you in hospital overnight, and involve incisions and removal of the vein. Recovery often included significant bruising, discomfort, and weeks away from normal routines, and patients were often recommended to take up to two weeks off work.

Today, varicose veins can be treated using minimally invasive procedures that close the faulty vein from the inside using keyhole techniques. These modern treatments are performed under local anaesthetic in a clinic setting, with no hospital stay required. They are, in fact, walk-in, walk-out treatments, meaning downtime is minimal, and recovery can be significantly less complex than after a surgical procedure.

Premier Veins specialises in these advanced treatments, which are designed to be safer, quicker, and far more comfortable than traditional approaches.

Recovering from modern varicose vein treatments

What options are there for treating varicose veins?

Rather than removing the vein, modern treatments seal it so blood naturally reroutes through healthier veins. The most popular options include:

Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA) – a keyhole treatment using controlled heat to close the vein. Guided by ultrasound, a thin plastic tube is inserted into the vein. Under local anaesthetic, a fine wire with the heating element at its tip is passed through the plastic tube to heat the walls of the vein. This causes it to collapse, seal up, and eventually be reabsorbed by the body.

Ultrasound-Guided Foam Sclerotherapy – a targeted foam treatment for tortuous surface varicose veins. Your consultant will use an ultrasound and administer a local anaesthetic to make small punctures into the vein to insert tiny tubes through. A clever foam mixture is then injected via the tubes, which causes the vein walls to collapse and seal shut. As a result, blood flow naturally redirects through other healthy veins.

Both treatments are carried out under local anaesthetic, usually taking under an hour.

Recovering from your procedure – what can you expect?

Immediately After Treatment

Recovery after Radiofrequency Ablation or Ultrasound-Guided Foam Sclerotherapy is typically straightforward:

● You can usually return to normal daily activities the same day. You should avoid driving on the day of the procedure but patients can return to driving very quickly after that.

● Make sure you keep moving to help circulation – for example, walk for a minimum of 5 minutes in every hour you are awake. However, vigorous exercise should be discussed at your follow-up appointment, and swimming should be avoided until after the bandages have come off.

● Compression stockings should be worn as directed by your consultant – typically for around 2 or 3 weeks.

● Mild bruising, discomfort, or swelling where the vein has been treated is normal

It’s important to understand that treated veins may look worse before they look better. This is part of the natural healing process as the body absorbs the closed vein. By following the aftercare instructions you are given closely, you will maximise your chances of a straightforward and speedy recovery.

Unlike traditional surgery, there is no hospital stay, no general anaesthetic, and minimal downtime.

Traditional Vein Surgery vs Premier Veins Walk-in Walk-out treatment – Recovery Compared

Traditional Vein Surgery

● Requires hospital admission
● Longer recovery time, often several weeks
● Increased bruising and discomfort
● Higher risk of complications such as nerve damage, infection or deep vein thrombosis

Studies show that recovery following traditional surgery is slower and more disruptive compared
to modern treatments.

Premier Veins Walk-in Walk-out treatments

● Specialist clinics offering keyhole procedures
● Only need a local anaesthetic
● Walk-in, walk-out on the same day
● Faster recovery and earlier return to work
● Lower complication rates

Clinical evidence has shown that treatments such as RFA and foam sclerotherapy offer excellent long-term results with significantly quicker recovery than traditional surgery.
