In the fourth of our ‘Meet the Team’ series, we chat to Mr Martin Claridge about his vascular and Premier Veins journey.
What interested you in a career in vascular care, and how did you get into it?
Patients with vascular problems require treatment across the body (except for the brain and the heart), so procedures are very varied, especially with the new keyhole ones available. I came to Birmingham to study for a higher degree in vascular research and didn’t leave!
How did you become a member of the Premier Veins team?
As I developed my expertise in varicose vein keyhole treatment, it became clear to me that the facilities available for patients were not ideal in terms of comfort, experience and expense. Sometimes, these patients were still being treated in an operating theatre unnecessarily! So, I decided to set up a dedicated clinic with my colleagues that has the right staff and the right facilities that patients deserve.
What is your favourite part about working for Premier Veins?
I like being able to offer patients the best treatment there is for varicose veins with my expert team in a relaxing environment.
What are your thoughts on the future of vein health and treatment?
Not all patients have access to NICE-approved treatments, and sometimes they are offered by clinicians without the appropriate training. We spend a lot of time teaching and training in the UK and internationally so that more patients can access the treatments we offer.
Are you currently working on any vein health research?
Clinics like ours, run and staffed by expert consultants and nurses with accredited training in vein treatments, will continue to research and develop new ones for their patients. We are currently looking at different devices to use in conjunction with Ultrasound-Guided Foam Sclerotherapy.
Do you have a particular vein condition that you specialise in, and what is your favourite treatment for it?
I have particular expertise in Ultrasound-Guided Foam Sclerotherapy and find it very successful when treating recurrent varicose veins.
What would you say to someone who was considering vein treatment?
The keyhole treatments we offer are virtually painless with minimal downtime. They take less than an hour, and you can even go back to work that very same day. Look for an accredited clinic where you will be seen by a specialist who will be with you throughout your entire treatment journey.
Thank you Martin for sharing your experience with us. We are so delighted to have you as part of the Premier Veins team.
